Reinventing the heritage

Hostětín (Czech Republic)

• the village (230 inhabitants) which lies in the White Carpathians Biosphere Reserve

Water: technology & nature

• lying upstream of drinking water reservoir, from 70's the construction ban started in the village - population decline was initiated

• in the beginning of 90's the new municipality decided to build the water treatment plant

• the workshop about the quality of the water in the landscape concluded that the reed bed water treatment plant could solve the situation

• from 1996 reed bed treatment plant started to operate

• "managed wetland habitat" with minimum power consumption treats the sewage

Energy: back to the renewable sources

• 9 solar systems for hot water supply have been installed from 1997

• wood is the traditional source of energy

• biomass heating plant combustioning the wood chips
  was started in 1999

• global	reduction of CO2 emissions
  local	better environment, support of local jobs, economy and resources

  
  

  the heat from the biomass is delivered to the
  83 % of houses in the village

• NGOs started to preserve gene pool of local fruit varieties from the beginning of 90's

• restoration of the drying kiln - dried apples, pears and plums

• apple juice production

• dissemination of projects - proposed to establish Centre for Sustainable Rural Technologies

• to organize workshops for various target groups (municipalities, craftsmen, SME, students, public)

• opportunity to see, to try and to understand.
