[Strawbale] Can straw bale construction go mainstream?

Hi there,

My name is Richard and I am an architecture student from Sheffield Uni. I am currently carrying out research for my 6th year dissertation which asks the question: 'Can the strawbale build become a mainstream form of construction in the UK?

With the UK currently experiencing a shortage of affordable housing, and the governments drive for carbon neutral construction by 2016; could straw construction, being a natural material with both great insulation and a low ebodied energy become part of the answer to these issues.

What do you feel the answer is? Do you feel it is a type of construction that should or could make the jump into the mainstream sector?

I would really appreciate any comments you may have concerning this question, issues that you feel may be relevant to discuss.

I would also really like to hear back from anybody outside the UK on whether they feel the straw bale construction happening in their country might be making this transition into the mainstream.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks
