Hi
I never would use railway sleepers!!!
In Germany they are all  treated with tar and/or. waste oil
The consequences are deadly for  soil and  water.
I don´t have a good feeling about car tyres. Sooner or later mother 
nature will transform them. With or without sun!
How about using large stones puting directly on the soil?
