Subject: Crime in Des Moines Declines After Streetlights Turned Off

According to an article today in the Des Moines Register, vandalism,
burglary, and robbery in Des Moines, Iowa have declined by 3.5% during
the first four months of 2004, after 4,055 streetlights were turned
off in September 2003 to save money. The article is online at

and once again shows that it is a myth that high light levels are
needed to deter crime.
