It's no wonder the voting is heavy on the towers of light, from the
link that you supplied, it's the only one that lists a title and it
also draws the most attention due to the length of the list of names.
From the pure psychology of it, most people would notice this one and
therefor vote on it.
How can someone see what each design actually contains?

I found the link to the drawings. It is off the main page...

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny-
protetchgallery.photogallery

Some of these designs look like they were submitted by 3rd graders.
Some also seemed like a joke. There were only 3 or 4 that even looked
like they could be memorials. If these were designed by architects, I
can't see how any consideration went into whether or not these things
will actually stand. I also think that the voting is swayed by the
picture of the towers of light appearing on the main page.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/

It seems like attention is being drawn to this particular design. I'd
suggest continuing to play down the obvious waste that this monument
promotes along with the fact that it will not be visible during the
day.

Peace & Dark Skies,

Scott Griswold

Here is a little TV spot I came across. It is dated as Aug. 9th, but
I am not sure what year. I would assume 2000. There is a video that
goes along with it. Enjoy.

Subject: More new FCOs spotted last night!

Greetings:

Road report: On a trip from Hartford to Saybrook we noticed around 100 new
FCOs installed on CT Route 9 South throughout the Middletown/Higganum area
last night! No pole spacing has been reduced at all. Unfortunately we did
not have a watch so we could not check the center distances, but I would
estimate they are around 200 feet apart. New poles and pilasters have been
installed approximately 10 feet from the existing poles. We could not
determine the wattage of the luminaires and I plan to check this out the next
time I go through that area.

Mounting height now appears to be 40 feet (pole + foundation + mast) with the
same setback as before. The luminaires appear to be Cooper OVF mounted level
with no upward tilt. The original semi-cutoffs and poles are still in
operation and the FCOs have not been turned on yet. The completed
installation will probably happen within the next couple of months when the
old the poles and fixtures are removed. No pole foundations have been poured
on the northbound lanes yet, but it appears to only be a matter of time.

We are making progress here in Connecticut by keeping the pressure on and the
DOT is responding magnificently! I can't wait to experience this new
lighting system in action.

Clear skies and good seeing,
Keep looking up!

Thank you for fighting the good fight.
We don't win them all, and yours was a
huge uphill struggle. You were organized,
factual, and passionate - three key ingredients
for a well fought campaign.

You raised the awareness levels of LP in NY
State. That alone is a great accomplishment.
With another governor, and at some time in the
future when the "stars are right", you can fight
once again, and WIN.

Many thanks,
Steve Pauley

Subject: News stories pertaining to light pollution

To all:

The following links come from the Wichita Falls, Texas Times Record News today Sunday. Overall, I think the concern to address light pollution got a sympathetic hearing. The first and third links incorporated stories from a wire service pertaining to breast cancer and effects on wildlife, the second deals with our efforts to promote dark skies and astronomy at Copper Breaks State Park near Quanah, Texas.

For those of you with an interest in astronomy, if you're ever in our part of West Texas, contact me off-site at the e-mail address below and we'll be glad to show our hospitality with scopes and stars.

I remain amazed - as was the case with me until two years ago - how readily we have as a nation accepted light pollution and trespass as a status quo without even being aware of the concepts and hence the problem. If it's true that lobsters thrown into hot water react vigorously but those cooked slowly starting off in cold water don't, then I suppose a lot of us are slow cooking lobsters. But it's gratifying to hear so many people tell me that once the problem has been pointed out how readily they now recognize it and wonder "Why?".

Regards,

Subject: Bad Lighting in Sherrill, New York

In honor of Gov. Pataki's (begin sarcasm) brilliant decision to reduce waste
and pollution, protect the citizens of the state from the adverse health
effects of bad lighting, improve safety by cutting back on glare, and help
save taxpayers dollars (end sarcasm) by vetoing the light pollution bills
that overwhelmingly passed the New York State legislature, I have posted on
my personal web site photos of monuments to bad lighting in my home town.
We're not just talking typical bad lighting here, we're talking glare and
waste on a scale which can only be described as stupendous.

Subject: World Summit on Sustainable Development

Greetings:

A brief presentation given before the members of this summit would provide an
excellent outreach opportunity to put LP on the global radar screen. It is a
golden opportunity to spread the message of obtrusive outdoor lighting reform
that enhances sustainable development and encourages energy conservation for
any community by providing achievable guidelines in the form of outdoor
lighting regulations.

Nothing ventured nothing gained. Although the local approach is slowly
working in a growing number of areas it cannot possibly keep up with the
advance of this ever increasing problem. Getting the audience of global
leaders could help to rapidly speed the process along.

Clear skies and good seeing,
Keep looking up!

Subject: "Artificial Light, Wildlife Studied" - Associated Press, 2/3/02

Greetings:

Outdoor lighting had a very busy day in the media today!! A good article
about this month's pending symposium on research focusing on unnaturally
occurring light and its negative impacts on flora and fauna appeared in the
Science section of Newsday.

"Artificial Light, Wildlife Studied" by Andrew Bridges, AP Science Writer
http://www.newsday.com/news/science/wire/sns-ap-deadly-lights0203feb03.story

This link comes courtesy of Travis Longcore of the Urban Wildlands Group in
California. (http://www.urbanwildlands.org) Thanks very much Travis! More
information on this very interesting conference is available at:

Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting:
http://www.urbanwildlands.org/conference.html

In the future, please try not to refer to any kind of light as being
artificial because all light, regardless of how it is generated, is indeed
very real. If the spectra and intensity meets certain parameters many
organisms cannot tell the difference, resulting in severe negative impacts to
their circadian rhythms, behaviors, and health.

Using phrases like *artificially generated illumination* or *unnaturally
occurring light* may help you to provide a far more accurate description. ;-)

Clear skies and good seeing,
Keep looking up!
